Yaxşı görmə, böyüməkdə olan uşaqların düzgün fiziki və əqli inkişafı üçün vacibdir. Körpə uşaqlarda görmə sistemi tam inkişaf etməmişdir. Beyində görmə mərkəzinin düzgün inkişafı üçün hər gözün bərabər iştirakı tələb olunur. Göz müayinəsi və görmə qabiliyyətinin qiymətləndirilməsi, korluqla nəticələnə biləcək vəziyyətlərin vaxtında aşkarlanması, uşağın gələcəkdə təhsildə müvəffəqiyyət qazanması, onun həyatının zəmanəti üçün çox vacibdir. Görmə zəifliyi üçün risk faktoru yüksək olan uşaqlarda (məsələn, vaxtından əvvəl doğuş, ailədə anadangəlmə katarakta anamnezi, retinoblastoma, metabolik və ya genetik xəstəliklər) görmə qüsurlarına daha çox rast gəlinir. Yaranan problemlərin ağırlaşmasının qarşısını almaq üçün bu qrup uşaqların göz müayinəsi proqramlarına daxil olması vacibdir.
